This delicious competition lot is incredibly complex on the nose, with aromas of raspberry, hibiscus, panela, and black tea. In the cup, the coffee is juicy and sweet, offering flavors of raspberry, mild florals, and tangy blood orange on the finish.
José Edwin Cuellar is a member of the Diviño Nino producer group and produces a broad spectrum of coffee varieties on his beautiful farm Finca Esmeralda. This bright and juicy selection from José’s 2019 harvest was awarded 3rd place at the inaugural Copa Suaceña: a regional cupping competition organized to highlight the very best coffees produced by individual members of two producer groups in southern Huila, Colombia that Passenger has been buying from for the past two years.
In a region with no shortage of beautiful coffee farms, José's Finca Esmeralda is particularly memorable with its panoramic views and the diversity of coffee varieties currently under cultivation (Colombia, Pink Bourbon, Marogogype, Red Tabi, Gesha). His 3rd place winning lot completed 8 days of wet fermentation after pulping and was then dried on a large covered drying bed for about 25 days. When asked about future goals, José shared that he would like to take steps to transition at least half of his farm to fully organic practices and would eventually like to build a new house on his property with expanded drying space for his coffee.
