Release #13: Edilma Bermeo Copa Suaceña 2019
Our team has spent the past couple weeks celebrating the release of the top 10 coffees from the 2020 Copa Suaceña, including a beautiful caturra variety selection from Edilma Bermeo that was awarded 5th place in the competition. Given that Doña Edilma was also recognized as one of the top 10 winners in 2019, we thought this would be a perfect time to re-release a small amount of the inaugural competition lot from her farm.
In addition to being a highly skilled coffee producer, Edilma serves as the president of La Cooperativa Divino Niño del Horizonte, a group of coffee farmers in the Suaza region of Huila, Colombia that Passenger has been buying from since 2018. Passenger's green buying team had the opportunity to meet Edilma on our first trip to Divino Niño and we were immediately impressed by the dedication and strong leadership that she brings to her community.
This 2019 competition lot from Edilma's farm was awarded 6th place in the 2019 "Suaza Cup". A beautifully structured coffee, it is characterized by inviting aromas of cocoa, mild florals, pear, and marzipan. In the cup, juicy pineapple acidity and flavors of kiwi and apple are anchored by a sweet, pleasantly coating base note of milk chocolate.
Tasting Edilma's 2019 and 2020 competition lots side by side underlines the very high standard of quality and consistency that she has achieved over the past two years. We are incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to share her beautiful coffees.
