    Release #14: Finca Reina

    Finca Reina de la Asunción is the name of a small coffee farm, owned and operated by Angel Benigno Capa Chamba, and located in Cangonamá, within the region of Loja, Ecuador. The farm sits at an impressive elevation of 2,050 meters above sea level and consists of 19 hectares in total. Of those 19 hectares, only 1 (about 2.4 acres) is planted in coffee. The remaining 18 hectares consist of a mix of fruit trees, a garden for personal consumption, and uncultivated land.

    This delightful field blend of typica and caturra from Finca Reina was offered to Passenger’s green buying team after it placed 10th at the 2018 Lo Mejor de Loja, a cupping competition organized to identify and celebrate the finest coffees of the Loja region. Angel's stunning competition lot was a particular favorite of ours during its time on the Reserve Lot menu and we couldn't be more pleased to release a tiny amount today that was set aside in the archive for future enjoyment!

    Finca Reina possesses the elegantly nuanced flavor profile that has characterized many of our favorite Ecuadorian coffees. Delicate florals on the nose introduce a complex and immaculately clean representation of the Loja region. In the cup, a raw honey-like sweetness is beautifully complemented by juicy stone fruit flavors and a refreshing black tea note on the finish.

    Freezer Fridays

    The Freezer Friday archival release series provides a unique new opportunity to explore Passenger’s treasure trove of notable harvests from the past. As those familiar with our approach to green coffee preservation will already know, we have actively stored our green coffee in an off-site deep freeze facility since our start as a company, keeping the coffees that we purchase in pristine condition following arrival.

    While the majority of Reserve Lot coffees that we buy sell out within months of their first appearance on our menu, we have, since our start in 2014, saved small volumes of many of our most extraordinary coffees for future enjoyment.

    This year we will begin to make a few of these “greatest hits” available for purchase in extremely limited quantities. Each release will be announced through Social Media and limited to 1 per order.

    The archival lots that we will be releasing in this way are not only shining examples of plant genetics, terroir, and skilled processing, they also offer a unique nostalgic opportunity: to revisit our previous experiences with these coffees and acknowledge once again some of the true high-water marks of producers whose coffees we have been privileged to taste over the years.
