    Release #22: Worka Chelbessa 2020

A few years back, Ethiopian businessman Negusse Debala, who had built a successful company importing computer parts in Addis Ababa, had an eye-opening experience while on a trip to the United States. After witnessing the preparation of a pour-over coffee in a Minnesota cafe, Negusse identified what he saw as significantly untapped potential in his home country. Shortly after his return to Ethiopia, Negusse founded SNAP Specialty Coffee, an export company that has swiftly built a strong reputation for connecting importers and roasters with some of the most sought after coffees in Ethiopia. In addition to offering quality control, export, and logistics services, SNAP owns and operates a number of their own washing stations, including two sites in Worka Chelbessa, that in recent years have produced truly stellar wet processed, dry processed, and experimental lots.

Passenger’s green buying team selected this particular lot from an array of samples representing the 2020 harvest in Worka Chelbessa. Following several popular months on the Reserve Lot menu, we preserved our last few pounds of this coffee in the freezer for future enjoyment. At the time of writing, we are proud to re-release a limited amount of this beautiful lot, providing a very limited opportunity to taste this harvest comparatively with Passenger’s 2021 Worka Chelbessa selection from the following year, which will be retired from our menu in the near future.

From beginning to end, enjoying a cup of this lovely coffee offers an incredibly complex and pleasing reflection of the Gedeb region. Enticing aromas of honeysuckle, rose, melon, and nectarine introduce a cup characterized by fresh flavors of bergamot and strawberry that are beautifully complemented by a delightful watermelon sweetness.

    Freezer Fridays

The Freezer Friday archival release series provides a unique new opportunity to explore Passenger’s treasure trove of notable harvests from the past. As those familiar with our approach to green coffee preservation will already know, we have actively stored our green coffee in an off-site deep freeze facility since our start as a company, keeping the coffees that we purchase in pristine condition following arrival.

While the majority of Reserve Lot coffees that we buy sell out within months of their first appearance on our menu, we have, since our start in 2014, saved small volumes of many of our most extraordinary coffees for future enjoyment.

This year we will begin to make a few of these “greatest hits” available for purchase in extremely limited quantities. Each release will be announced through Social Media and limited to 1 per order.

The archival lots that we will be releasing in this way are not only shining examples of plant genetics, terroir, and skilled processing, they also offer a unique nostalgic opportunity: to revisit our previous experiences with these coffees and acknowledge once again some of the true high-water marks of producers whose coffees we have been privileged to taste over the years.
