Release #8: Alexis Gonzalez 2018

This beautiful Colombian coffee, which graced Passenger's Reserve lot menu in 2018-2019, was recognized as the 7th place winner at the 2018 Acevedo Cup. It was produced by Alexis Gonzalez on his farm Los Aipes and exhibits a cup profile that ranks among our favorites in coffees from this region: jammy cooked-fruit qualities of berries and currants, delicate tropical notes, and rich caramel-like sweetness.

Some years ago Passenger made the decision to focus our Colombian sourcing primarily in the department of Huila - specifically Southern Huila. One town in particular captured our hearts and entranced our palates in the early days: Acevedo.

A frontier town in many senses, Acevedo sits nestled inside the meeting point of two of the three primary mountain ranges that the Andes split into. The socio-political result of this geographical location is that up until relatively recently Acevedo was a FARC stronghold. The FARC (The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or in Spanish: Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) was a guerrilla movement involved in the continued Colombian armed conflict from 1964 to 2017. The Guerrilla were able to use Acevedo’s immediate proximity to the jungle for hiding and protection while using the town itself as a place of commerce. Owing to the fact that the FARC was funded by kidnap and ransom, illegal mining, extortion or taxation of various forms of economic activity and the taxation, production, and distribution of illegal drugs, this was not an ideal situation for Acevedo (or the numerous other towns in Colombia with a strong FARC presence).

Also due to the relative proximity to the jungle, the micro-climate result of the geographical placement of Acevedo is warm days with very cool nights and regular cloud cover. This micro-climate provides ideal conditions for quality specialty coffee production. The first time our green buying team tasted a table of coffees from Acevedo we were blown away by the depth of flavor and complexity found in the coffees.

Back In 2016, our team helped to organize the inaugural Acevedo Cup, a competition to find and reward the best lots from the winter harvest in Acevedo. This 100% Colombia variety lot from Alexis Gonzalez is incredibly clean, a testament to stellar cherry selection and processing on Los Aipes.

    Freezer Fridays

The Freezer Friday archival release series provides a unique new opportunity to explore Passenger’s treasure trove of notable harvests from the past. As those familiar with our approach to green coffee preservation will already know, we have actively stored our green coffee in an off-site deep freeze facility since our start as a company, keeping the coffees that we purchase in pristine condition following arrival.

While the majority of Reserve Lot coffees that we buy sell out within months of their first appearance on our menu, we have, since our start in 2014, saved small volumes of many of our most extraordinary coffees for future enjoyment.

This year we will begin to make a few of these “greatest hits” available for purchase in extremely limited quantities. Each release will be announced through Social Media and limited to 1 per order.

The archival lots that we will be releasing in this way are not only shining examples of plant genetics, terroir, and skilled processing, they also offer a unique nostalgic opportunity: to revisit our previous experiences with these coffees and acknowledge once again some of the true high-water marks of producers whose coffees we have been privileged to taste over the years.
